We’ve been fortunate to have had some incredible young people come and stay with us on the Olive Grove over the years. Backpackers from more countries than we can count have come along and helped us out and we’ve really enjoyed learning about their cultures, their hopes and ambitions and especially about the types of food they like.
A common thread has always been people’s favourite pizza toppings. Davide, an Italian from Venice, stayed with us for almost three months before heading off to greater things, including applying to become a pilot in the Italian Air Force. Davide had never heard of, let alone tried, having pineapple as a topping on a pizza.
For me, having spent some time in both Italy and France, this was a complete shock as it was in the south of France that I discovered what has remained to this day my absolute favourite pizza topping – Anchovies and Pineapple! I just love the contrast between the saltiness of the anchovies and the sweetness of the pineapple, surely a match made in heaven?
I did some research and made Google my friend and it transpires that this is quite a contentious issue.
“Put pineapple on and it becomes a cake!” claimed one nay-sayer.
“It’s simply un-italian” said another.
To be blunt, I don’t care. To me, it’s delicious.
What do you think about pineapple as a topping? I’d love to know.
